Senior Living 1 – Prepare for a New Beginning
Where do you see yourself living in 5 years?, 10 years? What kind of lifestyle do you see in your future? Fortunately, we are seeing more options for quality living choices today than we had available in the past. Now maybe, you are beginning to explore ideas of a more relaxed life You want to enjoy the freedom that might come with being retired, or semi-retired. Now, you have to make a serious assessment of your health standings: physical mental, and financial. These may well be the most important factors in how and where you might live.
First and foremost, ask yourself the most important question – How is my physical health? Whether you are relatively healthy, or you require on-going medical assistance, the options to continue leading a full, happy life have increased over the last number of years. Having certain issues, say regular dialysis treatments, required a “nursing home” residence in the past. Now, with facilities offering transportation to treatment sites, you can live independently.
Next, your mental health has to be considered. What is your attachment to family and friends? Do you want to move to a more agreeable climate? How would such a move impact these relationships? If moving a great distance, will you find the challenges of being the “new kid on the block” overwhelming or exciting? If you have a partner, what will the move mean to that person? Only you can provide the correct answers to some of these questions, but all due diligence must be done before any move can be successful
Finally, you financial well-being has to be examined. Do you own your own home, or are you renting? Does the thought of finding your perfect place, maybe a golf course community with activities, strike your fancy? Maybe you have always wanted to escape the city crowds and find a little place in a rural setting. Whatever your dream may take you, being financially aware is required preparation. Research your idea(s) and ensure you are able to meet continuing obligations associated with your dream home.
The different types of housing choices will be reviewed and evaluated in future articles. This “health standings” checklist will be featured in each review. We look forward to hearing your concerns and thoughts.
